Actions Speak Louder Than Words |

Kimberly & 3 Other Candidates Join First Ever Student-Only Forum |
Last night, four candidates from District 4 virtually sat with social studies students (6th grade through high school) to answer their questions about our schools and this election. The candidates from our District 4 who showed up last night include (in alphabetical order) Kimberly Brown, Thomas Day, Carmen Gioiosa, and Karen Zaccor.
What do you tell students when they ask why someone says they put students first but choose not to show up to student events? My answer is and has always been that actions speak louder than words. Look at what people do (and follow the money), and they'll always tell you who they really are. |
SAVE THE DATE: October 26 Donation Drive |
Lakeview East's Annual Little Monster's Crawl is back on Oct 26 from 11am-3pm. Kids and families trick or treat the businesses around Lakeview East.
Kimberly Brown will be a stop near Belmont & Broadway this Oct 26 from 11am-3pm. Bring an item to donate (list coming soon in specific event email), and you'll get candy. Let's trick-AND-treat for our community!
CPS schools serve a lot of families in our area with huge need including clothes and personal hygiene items, especially as the cold months approach. Family and Community Engagement (FACE) in District 4 is run by Kimberly's friend, Evelyn, who she has personally committed to helping even before the school board campaign started. These items go directly to CPS parents and kids in need. |
Yesterday, there was a 6-hour meeting with the City Council and CPS CEO Pedro Martinez has he worked to get available TIF funds for our public schools (opposed to a high-interest loan).
The CEO (aka Superintendent) and his team are doing their jobs right now to finalize the budget. Kimberly Brown and every candidate running for elected school board in District 4, except Karen Zaccor who is "undecided", is on the record opposing the mayor's high-interest loan proposal. Cutting services is not an option in our public schools. TIF funds are in surplus and should be used right now. So how do will fill the gap short and long-term? Here are 6 quick hits from Kimberly Brown: |
-
Fix our contracts and procurement process (join the consortiums to get best-in-nation pricing!) to save tens of millions every year.
- Renegotiate property leases (CPS leases property at very high rates from the Archdioceses of Chicago, for example).
-
Renegotiate corporate service contracts that we're getting "hosed" on regarding our subpar food services and cleaning services. Then we move toward a hybrid outsourced and inhouse model (with an appropriate financial analysis) to improve quality and costs.
-
Work constructively with elected stakeholders and Illinois citizens to show the inequity of Chicago taxpayer allocations for CPS and rework the upside down allocations. Don't scream at the people you need to help you.
- Create a community grant team to apply for every grant available.
- Advocate at the Federal level for increased public education money from the Department of Defense budget.
