Fact-Check: If Ellen Wins, Karen Will Probably Get Appointed

A Vote for Ellen is ALSO a Vote for Karen Because of the Board of Ed Election Laws

I’ve been watching and listening during this final run-up to election day, and there is a misrepresentation that I want to clear up.

If Ellen Rosenfeld wins, Karen Zaccor will probably still get on the Board via a Mayoral appointment.

The past 10 days I’ve talked to people who are volunteering or voting for Ellen, and many said they are voting for her specifically because they are voting against Karen. When I told them that Karen lives in the opposite part of the district and would probably get appointed to the Board, they were shocked and unaware of this part of the election law.

Ellen lives in Sub-District 4B. Karen lives in Sub-District 4A. Ellen is backed by State elected officials. Karen is backed by the CTU. If Ellen wins, there is a high likelihood that Karen will get the required Board appointment.

Per the law for this election cycle, every district votes for one member THEN the mayor has to appoint the other board member from the opposite side of the district. So if someone in A wins, then someone from B legally has to be appointed. If someone in 4B wins, someone in 4A has to be appointed.

If You are Voting AGAINST Karen, Vote for Kimberly Because then Karen cannot Get Appointed

Kimberly Brown and Karen both live in Sub-District 4A. If Kimberly wins, Karen legally cannot get appointed. This would force the mayor to appoint a candidate who has been running (one of the other 4 who live in 4A, including Ellen) or pick a completely unknown person which would continue to erode his already low approval rating.
